Computer scientists on the team led by Professor Daniel Keim, professor of data analysis and visualization at the University of Konstanz, developed a visualization tool called "Coronavis" (abbreviated for "corona visualization"). The project was initiated by Professor Oliver Deussen (visual computing) at the University of Konstanz and Professor Hans-Joachim Kabitz, chief physician (specialist in internal medicine and pulmonology) at Konstanz hospital. This software enables doctors to get an overview of critical care bed capacities in German hospitals. So far, only the DIVI intensive care register exists—a website established at the end of February 2020 by the German association of intensive care and emergency medicine (Deutsche Interdisziplinäre Vereinigung für Intensiv- und Notfallmedizin (DIVI)), the Robert Koch-Institute (RKI) and the German Hospital Federation (DKG). This online platform can be used to register and enquire about free critical care beds with and without ventilators in all German hospitals. However, the website does not provide the actual number of critical care beds, but only shows whether capacities are "available," "limited," or "full."

Key facts:

  • "Coronavis" visualization (corona visualization) tool developed at the University of Konstanz
  • Online platform for the registration and enquiry of free critical care beds in hospitals all around Germany
  • Makes it possible to predict hospital shortages and take appropriate countermeasures, such as the centrally organized distribution of Covid-19 patients to hospitals with available beds
  • Visualization tool ready to use
  • Developed by a team of computer scientists led by Professor Daniel Keim, professor of data analysis and visualization, University of Konstanz
  • Initiated by Professor Oliver Deussen (visual computing) at the University of Konstanz and Professor Hans-Joachim Kabitz, chief physician (specialist in internal medicine and pulmonology) at Konstanz hospital
